3 Unusual Places to Visit in Warwickshire
We love exploring – it’s all part of the experience of staying at a country house hotel. Warwickshire is a beautiful county and we’re fortunate enough to be based in beautiful grounds right near some fabulous places. Rather than send you to areas that tourists flock to, our latest blog shares three more unusual spots and elaborates on their history.
Less than an hour’s walk from our hotel or just 6 minutes by car, Baddesley Clinton is a historic and interesting National Trust property. Built in the 13th century, this medieval manor even has a moat! During its history, it was equipped with Priest Holes to hide Jesuit clergymen and to save them from persecution. It’s worth going for the tour of the hiding places alone, not to mention the grounds, courtyard and gardens. There’s 500 years’ worth of history to discover.
Head to Leamington Spa by car and you can experience the Royal Pump Rooms – they’re a 25 minute or so drive from Wroxall Abbey. Leamington Spa fast became a spa resort thanks to the discovery of saline water, but did you know that the Romans were already aware of the rich minerals contained in the waters of the River Leam? By Victorian times, the water had risen in popularity again due to the therapeutic treatments believed to be administered by bathing or drinking it. Due to the village’s growth, this town now houses impressive examples of Regency architecture, not to mention an art gallery, museum and public library in the Baths.
You’ll reach this important bridge after an hour walk or 10 minutes’ drive from our hotel. Between 1813 and 1816 the South Stratford Canal was being built and some innovative cost-saving tactics had to be employed – this resulted in split bridges and Dick’s Lane is a fine example of one. One of the best preserved, it’s worth the wander to see it for yourself.
All three of the above places are in close proximity to our Warwick accommodation – if you have any more locations then we would love to hear about them!
